Ever had it? if not, chances are that you will! Upwards of 80% of us will have low back pain at some point in our lives, and it is the leading culprit in job-related disability and missed work.
Lucky for you, Low back pain also happens to be the most common thing that I treat!
While every case is unique, here are some general suggestions that are usually beneficial in cases of recent low back pain of mechanical origin:
Exercise or Stretching: Movement within the limits of your pain tolerance will help you feel better faster than staying immobilized. (total bed-rest in NOT a good idea!)
Ice: For new episodes of low back pain, I almost always recommend ice instead of heat. The reason is that there is already inflammation of the joints and muscles, and heat risks making it worse.
Painkillers: Yes… you read that right! In SHORT TERM doses, anti-inflammatory drugs can be helpful to take away some of the pain and allow your body to begin the healing process.
Chiropractic treatment: The most important step to feeling better – get your back examined and adjusted if necessary! I treat several cases of low back pain every single day, and most patients report feeling better on the way out than they did when they came in. Many minor back problems can be almost instantly relieved with appropriate spinal care from a chiropractor.
